21st-24th May 2020
The Team Weekend was Lockdown Orienteering first competition dedicated to teams.
Over 40 teams took part from countries right across the globe. The Open and Masters competition had 7 people in a team and the Juniors 5. There were 7 stages including The Short Gaffle, Rapid Route Game and Up or Down?
The Open winners were the French team KLS (yes we’d tipped them to win on Facebook due to strong individual performances on our previous competitions). They were followed by a team from Austria then ‘Nerima OLC & merry friends’ from Japan!
The Junior champions were SYO Killer Bees, showing it’s not only in real orinteering where South Yorkshire Orienteers juniors come out on top. They were followed by ‘The Masters’ from Switzerland and then Inverness Orienteering Club.
In the Masters it was a walkover for DEE Flailing Mouse (UK) as the only entrants.
To round off the weekend we had a relay race in Catching Features. Catching Features wasn’t part of the main competition this time but we did have one individual race with the top 3 from individual’s position from each team being added together. The top 3 teams then ran livestreamed relay. It wasn’t much of a surprise that KLS cruised away with the top place having been top 3 in the individual. But it was a very close battle for 2nd with South Yorkshire finishing just 10 seconds ahead of the Austrian team. You can rewatch the action from the relay here.
The Winners
Open: KLS (France) – Theo Fleurent, Marian Basset, Mathieu Kern-Gillard, Pierre Erbland, Hugo Vaxelaire, Basile Basset and Juliette Basset

For further information on the stages please visit the competitor information for each day here. In some of the stages you still have a go yourself to see how you would have got on (or to try again 😉 ).
Want to thank those people who made it happen. James and Simon Errington for results. Ben Brown for game creation. Color for the Catching Features maps. Graham Gristwood and Helen Errington for their guest appearances. Hector, Katherine, Craig and Brad for their livestream work.
The competition was donating some of the proceeds to the development of orienteering in North Macedonia and we were fortunate to use some maps from there during the competition.
What next? Orienteering restrictions continue so we will continue to provide orienteering related competitions you can do from your sofa! See the main page for further info on what’s planned.
